HCB Desktop and native captions: how to compare

Compare HCB Desktop and native captions using the employee’s calling applications, display needs, and daily tasks.

By Tenacity Updated

Check what your platform already provides

Include native captions in the comparison using the application and account the employee actually uses. Confirm that an administrator has enabled any required settings, and distinguish meeting captions from captions for ordinary telephone calls. The two do not always share the same availability.

For example, Microsoft Teams provides built-in meeting captions, display customization, and an option to use a human CART captioner. Microsoft distinguishes live captions from saved transcription. Check the current native documentation rather than assuming that an older limitation is still present.

Make the remaining need specific

A useful comparison begins with a problem such as losing sight of captions while working in another window, difficulty operating the caption controls, or a required calling workflow that does not provide suitable captions. Test that problem directly. Do not assume that all native captions are inaccurate or that all separate captioning software behaves the same way.

HCB Desktop brings Hamilton CapTel for Business captioning to your computer: real-time, human-assisted captions for phone calls and video meetings across Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, Webex, Avaya, and RingCentral. It runs on PC and Mac with no additional hardware.

Compare the same task in both setups

QuestionWhat to observe
Can I follow the conversation?Names, numbers, terminology, caption delay, and the employee’s ability to respond.
Can I read while doing my work?Caption size, position, contrast, scrolling, and visibility alongside the needed application.
Can I control the feature?Starting and stopping captions, keyboard use, call changes, and returning to normal work.
Does it cover this call path? The precise app/account, inbound or outbound call, headset, and network used in the trial.
What must IT manage?Installation, permissions, updates, support ownership, and the applicable data-handling terms.

Use similar audio and tasks when comparing outcomes. Let the employee describe effort and comprehension, not just whether words appeared. Record a failed or untested workflow explicitly; a good result in one meeting does not validate every calling app.

Include service terms, privacy, and ongoing cost

Ask what audio leaves the device, which service processes it, whether a human captioner can participate, and whether text is stored. Distinguish temporary on-screen captions, user-saved text, and provider retention. Review the terms for the actual service configuration rather than inferring privacy from the label “automated” or “human-assisted.”

Compare the full deployment cost: the platform license you already have, any required add-on, desktop software, administrative time, support, and renewals. Confirm IP CTS registration and use requirements with the provider. The procurement checklist can help IT and purchasing record these answers together.

Bring the employee’s tasks and existing setup to a Tenacity test drive to evaluate HCB Desktop in their daily workflow.
